2008 Message:

Dear Members and Friends of the J.B. Johnston Club,

OK, here is the lengthy (and belated) newsletter, but if you read it all I think you will be rewarded, both intellectually, spiritually and emotionally.  Main concerns: PROGRAM and MEMBERSHIP/REGISTRATION.

Everything is now set up to join, and register for meetings for the 2008 Washington DC meeting of the Karger Workshop and J.B. Johnston Club on Thursday and Friday, November 13 and 14.

PROGRAM:  The Karger Workshop organizers are R. Glenn Northcutt and Mario F. Wullimann and the title is “Forebrain Evolution in Fishes.”  Dr. Rudolf Nieuwenhuys is the distinguished invited speaker.

There were more than the average number of abstracts submitted for the regular JBJC meeting so, for one of the first times ever, the program committee was faced with the agonizing task of winnowing down the offerings.  They made some difficult decisions, but the result is that we have a “fair and balanced” program which should be very appealing to all members.  (Again, check out the attachment).

 MEMBERSHIP AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

We have been in a deficit situation for several years despite raising the registration fees.  I  have, by fiat, raised the rates again (sorry, but you know EVERYTHING is more expensive now).  All of you who regularly attend professional meetings absolutely know that JBJC is the best bargain on the block.  A lot of this has to do with the fact that this is a “club” made up of friends and colleagues and run by volunteers.  The following are several options to pay for membership and registration for the meeting.

CREDIT CARD, CASH, CHECK, BUT REGARDLESS OF PAYMENT OPTION:

1. FIRST STEP FOR ALL: JOIN THE JBJC!!  Membership dues is:
            Student/Retired: $25.00
            Regular Membership: $50.00

2. SECOND STEP: REGISTER FOR THE MEETING(S)

2a. CREDIT CARD OPTION (Very much preferred!):  Go to "Acteva" which is a company that handles registrations via credit card.  Our JBJC site is:
http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?binid=1&bevaID=163487

THIS YEAR AGAIN: If you register for BOTH Karger and JBJC meetings combined, I've tried to make it little easier for you and there will be a slight discount: student/retired: $90.00 and regular: $180.00. Late and on-site registrations is TWICE the price, so you are strongly encouraged to register on time!!

Another note: “Acteva" will appear on your credit card bill, NOT "J.B. Johnston Club" or anything related to the name of the club.  Don't be thrown off by the terms "tickets" at the Acteva website, it just means registration or membership.

2b. CHECK OR CASH:  Membership forms are available as an attachment to this email. You are certainly welcome to use this hard copy form if you wish to pay with a check or cash and send it by regular mail to my address:

            4001 Avenue G

Overseas members can pay cash or check at the meeting at the regular rate, but must submit this form to me (again, by email, fax or regular mail) before October 31st. (At the meeting, I will also accept British pounds, Euros, and Japanese Yen in cash at standard, "rounded off" rates.)

IF YOU WALK UP TO THE TABLE AT THE MEETING: We love you, we embrace you, you are welcome to join and participate, BUT the price will be substantially higher, like TWICE.   We will try to have a computer that will enable you to register on-line, but you should be prepared to pay cash or check and it will still cost you TWICE AS MUCH.

FORGOTTEN STUFF:

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm sure I've forgotten something(s), but I'm also confident that I will hear about it!  Let me know if I can answer your questions or if you have any other problems.  But, as I tell my students, "If the question was answered in the syllabus it will cost you points.”  But, realizing the suspiciously attractive and intelligent people that you are, I assume that you would NEVER present me with any seemingly stupid questions or (in a clutch) admit that you have not read the syllabus (i.e., all of the above).

See y'all in Washington!
